Missions Is A Mindset

Message Notes

Message Notes

Luke 4:38–44 (NLT) — 38 After leaving the synagogue that day, Jesus went to Simon’s home, where he found Simon’s mother-in-law very sick with a high fever. “Please heal her,” everyone begged. 39 Standing at her bedside, he rebuked the fever, and it left her. And she got up at once and prepared a meal for them. 40 As the sun went down that evening, people throughout the village brought sick family members to Jesus. No matter what their diseases were, the touch of his hand healed every one. 41 Many were possessed by demons; and the demons came out at his command, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But because they knew he was the Messiah, he rebuked them and refused to let them speak. 42 Early the next morning Jesus went out to an isolated place. The crowds searched everywhere for him, and when they finally found him, they begged him not to leave them. 43 But he replied, “I must preach the Good News of the Kingdom of God in other towns, too, because that is why I was sent.” 44 So he continued to travel around, preaching in synagogues throughout Judea.

Comfort

  • I like comfort.
    • Air Condition
    • Pillows and Blankets
    • Comfort food
  • I like comfort life
    • How much would you love to just go sit on beach somewhere for the rest of your life?
  • Comfort has a danger

Settled

  • When we are comfortable we settle
  • We settle into a routine - I drink the same coffee, eat the same bar, do the same walk
  • We settle into a lifestyle - Get nestled in house, a community, a way of life

Missional Mindset ≠ Settled

  • There is a direct contradiction between the missional mind and the settled mind.
  • The settled mind says “everything is at peace, I can rest
  • The missional mind says “something is unfinished, I must work
  • My critique of American perspective of the gospel is that “THE WORK IS DONE, LET’S SETTLE”
    • We are comfortable, we have settled, we are not missional

The Solution

  • Discomfort
    • Ant hill poked
    • Fire alarm in the middle of the night
  • God can and will use discomfort to get you moving
    • Abram had settled, his father died and he moved on
    • Lot had settled, the angels came and told him to leave!
    • Jonah had settled into the cruise ship, God sent a storm and a fish.
    • The church had gotten settled and comfortable, and God said, let’s move!
  • OR.... You can fix the problem yourself by changing your scenario and getting a missional mindset.
    • A broken comfort zone!
    • COLD PLUNGE POOL
  • Our comfort zones are so established that we must do things to shock ourselves out of our environment.
    • Local missions and outreach
    • Foreign missions
    • Talk to someone about Jesus
    • Pray with someone

4 mindsets that provoke to progress:

  1. A life is on the line
    1. Nothing will make you move like realizing someone’s life is on the line!
    2. Jude 23 (NLT) — 23 Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment. Show mercy to still others, but do so with great caution, hating the sins that contaminate their lives.
    3. Paul
      1. I make the Jew jealous so that I might save some - Romans
      2. I have become all things to all people that I might save some - 1 Corinthians 9
      3. I am a slave to all people that I might bring some to Christ - 1 Corinthians 9
    4. The firefighters in 9/11
      1. Didn’t go in because that was their job
      2. Didn’t go in because they would be celebrated world-wide
      3. They went in to save a life!
    5. Literally saving them from ETERNAL SEPARATION FROM GOD
    6. "Many a morning have I stood on the porch of my house, and looking northward, have seen the smoke arise from villages that have never heard of Jesus Christ. I have seen, at different times, the smoke of a thousand villages—villages whose people are without Christ, without God, and without hope in the world ... The smoke of a thousand villages ... The smoke of a thousand villages." Thus spoke the South African pioneer, Robert Moffat. The meeting closed, and out of the door of the hall went a young man—a young medical student, David Livingstone; but with him went the words of Moffat—"The smoke of a thousand villages whose people have never heard ... The smoke of a thousand villages."
  2. A fight is all around me
    1. Paul recognized he was in a spiritual battle.
      1. 2 Corinthians 10:3–4 (NLT) — 3 We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. 4 We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.
      2. You will wake up quickly when you are thrust into a fight! Let someone hit you upside the head and you will quickly realize “this is not business as usual.”
      3. Ask a soldier in a gun battle, or one who’s seen a comrade get wounded or killed, when you are in a battle, YOU WAKE UP!
    2. It’s not just the devil we are fighting, we are in a competition with culture.
      1. In Italy, there are so many restaurants, if you stay in your little corner, you will go out of business. You have to get out there and grab people!
  3. A deadline is in front of me
    1. You ladies, what do you do the closer the clock gets to you having to leave for the day? You start running around your house trying to change clothes, brush your teeth, put on makeup, yell at kids..
    2. John 9:4 (NLT) — 4 We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work.
    3. Ephesians 5:16 (NLT) — 16 Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.
  4. A large prize awaits me
    1. When there is a prize, people do crazy things.
    2. Show video of 1.28 billion dollar prize
    3. 1 Corinthians 9:23–24 (NLT) — 23 I do everything to spread the Good News and share in its blessings. 24 Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win!

These messages are designed to provoke you!

  • To say things you wouldn’t normally say
  • To take actions you wouldn’t normally take
  • To believe things you wouldn’t have believed
