Missions Is A Mindset

Message Notes

Message Notes

Mark 1:35–39 (NLT) — 35 Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray. 36 Later Simon and the others went out to find him. 37 When they found him, they said, “Everyone is looking for you.” 38 But Jesus replied, “We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came.” 39 So he traveled throughout the region of Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and casting out demons.

Jesus was missional in everything He did.

  • The son of man has come to seek and save that which was lost
  • His Father is missional in everything He did

Matthew 10:1 (NLT) — 1 Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness.

Matthew 10:5–8 (NLT) — 5 Jesus sent out the twelve apostles with these instructions: “Don’t go to the Gentiles or the Samaritans, 6 but only to the people of Israel—God’s lost sheep. 7 Go and announce to them that the Kingdom of Heaven is near. 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!

Missional is how we are to perceive our lives

  • Missions is not a nebulous international trip, it is everyday!
  • Every day, we can choose between MISSION or MUNDANE

5 Principles of a missional mindset

  1. Principle #1 - We GATHER to be SENT
    1. “Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority”
    2. Take a deep breath and exhale
    3. Just like the body inhales and exhales, the body of Christ was meant to be the same.
      1. Isaiah 6 - In the throne room, here I am send me
      2. Luke 10 - He gathered his disciples together, and then sent them
      3. Acts 2 - They were all assembled in the upper room, and then dispersed
      4. Acts 13 - They were praying and fasting, and the Lord said
    4. Problem with many churches and Christians
      1. Always inhaling, never exhaling
      2. Nothing is more satisfying than taking a deep breath when you are out of air, but nothing is less satisfying than trying to take another breath when you are already full.
    5. Example of me in the pool trying to swim four laps
    6. We must INHALE - This week we are in prayer every night
    7. We must EXHALE
  2. Principle #2 - Missions and the Miraculous go together
    1. “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons.”
    2. I believe the miraculous accompanies the mission!
    3. Miracles to meet the need
    4. Miracles to prove the message
    5. Miracles to provide for the missionary!
  3. Principle #3 - Missions and Mercy go together
    1. “Give as freely as you have received!”
    2. Jesus’ ministry always met the need.
      1. Hunger - loaves and fishes
      2. Wedding party - water to wine
      3. Widows son - raised from the dead
      4. Temple tax - Coin in mouth
    3. Great mission mindset is MEET THE NEED!
    4. Uganda, Gary Skinner asked the question “what’s the greatest need”
  4. Principle #4 - Missions happen in Moments
    1. Jesus’ entire ministry was “moments with people”
      1. The woman at the well
      2. The man beside the pool
      3. The religious leader’s daughter
    2. To be missionaly minded, you are LOOKING FOR MOMENTS
      1. Moments to pray, moments to pay, moments to stay, moments to say
  5. Principle #5 - Missions bring Meaning
    1. Luke 10:17–21 (NLT) — 17 When the seventy-two disciples returned, they joyfully reported to him, “Lord, even the demons obey us when we use your name!” 18 “Yes,” he told them, “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning!
    2. MISSION IS BETTER THAN MUNDANE!
    3. The distinct feeling of satisfaction I had
    4. The distinct feeling of satisfaction everyone had
    5. “My nourishment comes from doing the will of him who sent me, and from finishing His work”
    6. The happiest you will ever be is in the middle of being used by God.

So, the question is, DO I HAVE TO GO ON A TRIP TO DO MISSIONS?

  • NO!
  • Missions is every day. You have a choice every day between mundane and mission.
  • “Each day you awaken me to do your will”

Salvation

  • Your life begins when you awaken to God’s purpose for it. If you have not surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, you are missing out!
