Wisdom That Works

Building For Eternity

Message Notes

Intro

  • Tension hook - This week there was a huge belief that the rapture was going to happen.
    • It was known as #RaptureTok (Don’t believe everything on tiktok)
    • It highlights something that is actually important
  • Big story this week - Jesus is coming back
    • He talked it about it quite a bit - 15%
    • “This will be what it is like when the son of man returns”
  • ETERNITY!
  • When talking about Wisdom, one of the greatest questions you can answer is, are you living with eternity in mind?!

Passage

  • Psalm 90:10–12 (NLT) — 10 Seventy years are given to us! Some even live to eighty. But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear, and we fly away. 11 Who can comprehend the power of your anger? Your wrath is as awesome as the fear you deserve. 12 Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.
  • Comment on verse:
    1. “Teach us to realize”, meaning there should be an awakening and awareness.
    2. When we realize it’s brevity, we will grow in wisdom.. It’s just like the fear of God.

1. The Mindset of Eternity

  • Four important mentalities

Life is short! Like way shorter than we even realize. Old people are just young people with a few years. In my mind I’m still a teenager that married his girlfriend, but in reality, I have a teenager that’s picking colleges. Ken Ellis turning 78 yesterday and saying the older you get the faster it goes!

Eternity vastly outweighs this life. - If your current life is like a grain of sand, your eternal one is all the sand in all the oceans, and all the grains of sand on every rock in our universe.

  • 2 Corinthians 4:16–18 (ESV) — 16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

We tend to build our lives around the temporary rather than the eternal. Our careers, money making, house buying, business transactions. Even our planning and strategizing and calendar insight is about this life.

  • Don’t prepare for the wrong trip!

Every action here echoes forever. Every word, conversation, deed, motive, moment. Our actions now mean so much on the other side. Dog prints on sidewalk

  • Application: Put on the believer’s hat—look at the moment through an eternal lens.

2. What Matters in Eternity

  • John 9:4 (NLT): "We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work."
  1. 4 important questions
    1. Did you OBEY?
      1. What’s going to matter the most in eternity is this word - OBEDIENCE
        1. Did you Discover, Develop, and Deploy your God given assignment?
      2. This can be super intimidating! Like, what am I supposed to do?
        1. God-use-me hearts are the wisest hearts.
        2. Jesus woke up each morning ready to obey the will of the Father
    2. Did you IMITATE?
      1. Seeing what He’s doing, then doing it. Hearing what He’s saying, then saying it.
      2. Discernment is super key
    3. Did you BUILD on CHRIST?
      1. 1 Corinthians 3:11–14 (NLT) — 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ. 12 Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials—gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. 13 But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. 14 If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward.
      2. Christ must be the foundation of everything we are building!
      3. Fire will test the materials we use to build on Christ! Take heed to what you’re building.
    4. Did you learn to love
      1. This was really Christ’s heart towards us and for us. That we learn to love.

3. The Most Valuable Eternal Thing

  1. I want to tell you the most valuable essence in this universe - a human soul!
    1. Almost all matter is empty space
    2. The earth would essentially be the size of a baseball
    3. THE ONLY THING THAT WILL LAST FOREVER IS A HUMAN SOUL
  2. Proverbs 11:30 (ESV) — The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and whoever captures souls is wise.
  3. Daniel 12:3 (ESV) — And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever
  4. The greatest work you can set your hand to is the salvation of souls
    1. It’s why Jesus easily mastered the fishing business but then set his disciples' hearts to what really mattered fishing for people.
    2. FOLLOW ME AND I’LL TEACH YOU HOW TO FISH FOR PEOPLE
  5. Story of man visiting hell - It was a lake of fire as far as the eye could see
    1. “Jay went to hell”
    2. Anyone who pulls someone out of that eternal destruction is a HERO
    3. Jude 22–23 (NLT) — 22 And you must show mercy to those whose faith is wavering. 23 Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment.
    4. If you pulled someone out of a burning building, we would celebrate you for years to come.
    5. We need to celebrate soul winners in the same way.
  6. Your solo mission
    1. I’m praying for each of us to win a soul
    2. I’m praying for each of us to invite a soul
  7. Our team mission
    1. Orca’s working together
    2. The church is a team—we’re not isolated in this mission.
  8. With extra time - talk about the twins of Evangelism/Discipleship

Transition - I must acknowledge that the last two weeks have been WILD. So much has transpired. This is what I know, the current moment is special. I believe it’s harvest time. It’s a time when the hearts of people are very open to the gospel. HERE’S THE BIG QUESTION - HOW WILL YOU RESPOND TO THIS MOMENT?

  • Will you focus on Eternity?
  • Will you focus on Souls?
  • Will you commit to attempting to win ONE SOUL for Christ (How many of you have ever won a soul to Christ?)
  • Will you commit to bringing one person to Church?

Part 1: Wisdom Is My Wingman

In Part 1 of our Wisdom That Works series, Pastor Jonathan explores the life of Solomon and the book of Proverbs to show us that wisdom isn't optional, it's essential. From morning routines to life-altering decisions, we're constantly presented with crossroads. This message helps you recognize your need for God's perspective and shows you how to begin walking in true wisdom!

Part 2: The God Centered Life

In Part 2 of our Wisdom That Works series, we explore one of the most foundational truths for living a wise life: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Pastor Jonathan shares how living in awe, reverence, and obedience to God is the starting point for true wisdom—and how it shapes every area of life.

Part 3: The Folly of Sand, and the Wisdom of Stone

Every life is being built on something, but not every foundation will last. In Part 3 of our Wisdom That Works series, Pastor Jonathan unpacks Jesus' teaching in Matthew 7 and shows us the danger of building on the shifting sands of culture, philosophy, and self-reliance versus the solid rock of God's Word…. when the storm comes, only one foundation will stand! This message challenges us to dig deep, build on stone, and live in daily obedience to the Word of God.

Part 4: The Blessing of Loyalty

From the painful realities of disloyalty to the life-giving examples of Jonathan and David, this message challenges us to examine our friendships, marriages, families, and communities.

Part 5: Words that Work

Your words are powerful… they shape your life, steer your direction, and leave a legacy long after they’re spoken. In Part 5 of our Wisdom That Works series, Pastor Jonathan explores the wisdom of controlling our tongue and using our speech not for destruction, but to bring life!

Part 6: Building For Eternity

Are you building your life for today, or for forever? In Part 6 of our Wisdom That Works series, Pastor Jonathan challenges us to shift our focus from the temporary to the eternal. This message reminds us that every word, every action, every choice echoes into eternity... and that wisdom begins with living with eternity in mind.

Part 7: The Workers Wisdom

What if your work isn’t just a job, but an act of worship? In this powerful message, Pastor Jonathan shares how to find purpose, balance, and integrity in your daily grind. God created work, and when we do it with excellence and faithfulness, we honor Him.

Part 8: Wisdom for a Son

In the final week of our Wisdom That Works series, Pastor Jonathan unpacks the heart of Solomon’s message to his son, and to us. Proverbs paints a vivid picture of two voices calling out: one of wisdom and one of folly. Each offers a way of life, a house to dwell in, a table to eat at, and an outcome to live with.
