Wisdom for a Son

Message Notes

Intro

  • BOLD NIGHT HAPPENING
  • ADVANCING THE KINGDOM - NOVEMBER 18-21
  • This will be the last message in the series

Tension

  • Solomon is instructing a young man
    • I love watching my kids do what they do
    • Ultimately I want them to win
    • Driving to football practice last week’
  • Solomon was exposed to so much throughout his life, he really saw the dangers.
    • This message is geared towards young people, from the word, but also for all of us, because we are all God’s kids and he wants us to win in life.
  • You could read the first nine chapters of Proverbs as literal, or you can see the profound symbolism at play

Passage

Proverbs 9:1–6 (NLT) — 1 Wisdom has built her house; she has carved its seven columns. 2 She has prepared a great banquet, mixed the wines, and set the table. 3 She has sent her servants to invite everyone to come. She calls out from the heights overlooking the city. 4 "Come in with me," she urges the simple. To those who lack good judgment, she says, 5 "Come, eat my food, and drink the wine I have mixed. 6 Leave your simple ways behind, and begin to live; learn to use good judgment."

Proverbs 7:6–23 (NLT) — 6 While I was at the window of my house, looking through the curtain, 7 I saw some naive young men, and one in particular who lacked common sense. 8 He was crossing the street near the house of an immoral woman, strolling down the path by her house. 9 It was at twilight, in the evening, as deep darkness fell. 10 The woman approached him, seductively dressed and sly of heart. 11 She was the brash, rebellious type, never content to stay at home. 12 She is often in the streets and markets, soliciting at every corner. 13 She threw her arms around him and kissed him, and with a brazen look she said, 14 “I’ve just made my peace offerings and fulfilled my vows. 15 You’re the one I was looking for! I came out to find you, and here you are! 16 My bed is spread with beautiful blankets, with colored sheets of Egyptian linen. 17 I’ve perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. 18 Come, let’s drink our fill of love until morning. Let’s enjoy each other’s caresses, 19 for my husband is not home. He’s away on a long trip. 20 He has taken a wallet full of money with him and won’t return until later this month.” 21 So she seduced him with her pretty speech and enticed him with her flattery. 22 He followed her at once, like an ox going to the slaughter. He was like a stag caught in a trap, 23 awaiting the arrow that would pierce its heart. He was like a bird flying into a snare, little knowing it would cost him his life.

This message helps you recognize your need for God's perspective and shows you how to begin walking in true wisdom!

Part 2: The God Centered Life

In Part 2 of our Wisdom That Works series, we explore one of the most foundational truths for living a wise life: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Pastor Jonathan shares how living in awe, reverence, and obedience to God is the starting point for true wisdom—and how it shapes every area of life.

Part 3: The Folly of Sand, and the Wisdom of Stone

Every life is being built on something, but not every foundation will last. In Part 3 of our Wisdom That Works series, Pastor Jonathan unpacks Jesus' teaching in Matthew 7 and shows us the danger of building on the shifting sands of culture, philosophy, and self-reliance versus the solid rock of God's Word…. when the storm comes, only one foundation will stand! This message challenges us to dig deep, build on stone, and live in daily obedience to the Word of God.

Part 4: The Blessing of Loyalty

From the painful realities of disloyalty to the life-giving examples of Jonathan and David, this message challenges us to examine our friendships, marriages, families, and communities.

Part 5: Words that Work

Your words are powerful… they shape your life, steer your direction, and leave a legacy long after they’re spoken. In Part 5 of our Wisdom That Works series, Pastor Jonathan explores the wisdom of controlling our tongue and using our speech not for destruction, but to bring life!

Part 6: Building For Eternity

Are you building your life for today, or for forever? In Part 6 of our Wisdom That Works series, Pastor Jonathan challenges us to shift our focus from the temporary to the eternal. This message reminds us that every word, every action, every choice echoes into eternity... and that wisdom begins with living with eternity in mind.

Part 7: The Workers Wisdom

What if your work isn’t just a job, but an act of worship? In this powerful message, Pastor Jonathan shares how to find purpose, balance, and integrity in your daily grind. God created work, and when we do it with excellence and faithfulness, we honor Him.

Part 8: Wisdom for a Son

In the final week of our Wisdom That Works series, Pastor Jonathan unpacks the heart of Solomon’s message to his son, and to us. Proverbs paints a vivid picture of two voices calling out: one of wisdom and one of folly. Each offers a way of life, a house to dwell in, a table to eat at, and an outcome to live with.
