Psalms of Summer

I Dwell, He Delivers

Message Notes

Psalm 91:1–16 (ESV) — 1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” 3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. 5 You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. 8 You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. 9 Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place— the Most High, who is my refuge— 10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. 12 On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot. 14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. 15 When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

We need to divide this chapter in three ways:

  1. Danger
    1. It’s clear we are living in a dangerous world.
      1. Violence, spirit of violence, threat of natural disaster, plagues
    2. The following are things you can do NOTHING about
      1. Snare of the fowler - Your enemy
        1. 1 Peter 5:8 (NLT) — 8 Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.
      2. Deadly pestilence - Deadly things
      3. Terror of the night - Demons, nightmares, break-ins
      4. Arrow that flies by day - Violence, Drive-by shootings
      5. Pestilence that stalks in the darkness - Unknown tragedies
      6. Destruction that wastes at noonday - Mass destruction
    3. I WILL NOT FEAR
      1. If David had a theme to His life, it would be “I AM NOT AFRAID!”
        1. He had lions and bears attack him.
        2. He fought a giant.
        3. He had a king chasing him down.
    4. Take a moment and talk to people with fear:
      1. You have 14 locks, 5 cans of mace, 3 shotguns, 4 dogs, a camera system
      2. You have 7 hand santitizers, 3 masks, bee suit
      3. The greater our trust, the lesser our fear
  2. Deliverance
    1. What can you count on God to do?
      1. Be a shelter, refuge, and fortress
        1. Context:
          1. Cities of refuge
          2. Cave of Adullum
        2. You don’t need shelters if hard times don’t come. You only need shelters if hard times come.
      2. Be faithful - “His faithfulness is a shield and a buckler”
      3. Guard my dwelling - “No evil will befall you, no plague come near your tent”
      4. Send his angels to guard - “He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”
    2. 8 promises
      1. Psalms 91:14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. 15 When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”
      2. He will deliver - break chains and pull out of captivity
      3. He will protect - guard me in chaos
      4. He will answer - hear my cry
      5. He will be present - be next to me
      6. He will rescue - save me
      7. He will honor - lift me
      8. He will satisfy - with long life
      9. He will show salvation - total redemption and recompense
  3. Dwell
    1. It’s HIS job to deliver, it’s my job to DWELL
      1. I don’t have to fix it all, I just have to Dwell
    2. It’s my job to
      1. Find the shelter - In the storm, find the face of Jesus
      2. Fix my eyes on the shelter - Don’t let my eyes drift
      3. Abide in the shelter - Stay in the shelter
      4. Declare about the shelter - Boast in the shelter
      5. Rest in the shelter - Trust, relax, rest
      6. Call on the shelter - “because He knows my name, I will answer Him.”
    3. The shadow of the Almighty is the throneroom of God
      1. Ephesians 2:5–6 (NLT) — 5 that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) 6 For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.
      2. Who is going to mess with someone who is seated in the presence of the LORD?

Closing:

  • We all need a shelter, a refuge
  • For this life
  • But more importantly for the life that’s coming!
