A New Day

Three Steps to a New Day

Message Notes

  1. Intro
    1. Last week, we spoke about the triumphal entry, the parade into Jerusalem where Christ rode in on a donkey. Today, we are going to look at Christ’s final time with His disciples in the upper room and the garden of Gethsemane.
    2. A person’s final hours on earth are extremely significant. They represent how that person wants to be remembered, their final comments to those that they live who are perhaps standing around their bed.
    3. Jesus brought His disciples to an upper room prepared for the Passover Feast. You can feel His passion as He communicated to His twelve disciples that He was at the end of life.
  2. TEXT—Luke 22:14-20 (Msg)
    1. “When it was time, he sat down, all the apostles with him, and said, “You have no idea how much I have looked forward to eating this Passover meal with you before I enter my time of suffering. It’s the last one I’ll eat until we all eat it together in the kingdom of God.” Taking the cup, he blessed it, then said, “Take this and pass it among you. As for me, I’ll not drink wine again until the kingdom of God arrives.” Taking bread, he blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, given for you. Eat it in my memory.”He did the same with the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the NEW COVENANT written in my blood, blood poured out for you.”
  3. Three steps to a NEW DAY:
    1. “New covenant”: Receive YOUR FORGIVENESS.
      1. A “covenant” is a sworn oath. It is becoming one with another person. Everything that’s yours become theirs and vice-versa. The only thing that even remotely resembles it is a marriage covenant (It is an oath. It means two people are blending into one: “The two shall become ONE FLESH.”).
        1. Christ is saying that you and Him are going to become “one Spirit.” “He that is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.” He would never think of not giving you what you need because it already belongs to you. “I am the vine, you are the branch.” He’s righteous, you are righteous. He’s blessed, you are blessed. He’s free, you are free.
      2. “New covenant” is replacing the Old Covenant or the Old Testament. Many people still think of knowing God as knowing Him with the Old Testament sacrifices. They had to kill a lamb or a goat every time they sinned (flocks of goats for me!). You don’t have to do anything but receive your forgiveness.
      3. “In MY BLOOD, poured out for you.”
        1. It is not just a “sworn oath,” it is a “blood oath.” Jesus has sealed His promises in the New Testament with His very own blood.
        2. Jesus didn’t just “forgive us of all our sins.” He PAID FOR ALL OUR SINS. His blood also PAID FOR ALL OUR SICKNESSES. JESUS PAID FOR OUR FREEDOM. JESUS PAID FOR OUR FINANCIAL PROVISION. There is a difference in a meal being “on the house” and a meal being paid for by somebody else.
        3. Heb. 10:12—“But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God.”
    2. “New commandment”: Restore YOUR RELATIONSHIPS.
      1. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (Jn. 13: 34-35)
      2. “Just as I HAVE LOVED YOU, YOU ARE TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER.” This was also a “new commandment,” a servant love. He washed their feet during the meal. He demonstrated “loving your neighbor as yourself.” He demonstrated true love is serving others, preferring others, honoring others.
      3. This is a NEW KIND OF LOVE. In the Old Testament, it was an “eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” Jesus was telling us to “love your enemies, pray for those who despitefully use you.” Forgiving those who have betrayed you (washing the feet of Judas).
      4. This is not something you can just DO. Your relationships will never be healed without Jesus’ love operating through you. When your sins are forgiven, Jesus’ love begins to flow through you to others.
    3. “New commitment”: Surrender YOUR WILL
      1. “And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will” (Mk. 14:36)
      2. The third area of a “New Day” is when you surrender your will to God. When you do your own will, it is the “old way.” We all naturally RESIST HIS WILL, REBEL AGAINST HIS WILL. When you submit yourself, your will, and everything to obeying God, you enter into the “New Day” and the “new way” of living.
      3. “ABBA, FATHER, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me”—
        1. Abba, Father” is a tender word a child uses for their Papa, their Daddy. Our Father KNOWS BEST and we will be blessed if we do His will.
        2. All things are possible for you.” When we obey His will, “all things are possible for Him.” He can do miraculous things through a life that is yielded completely to Him.
        3. “REMOVE this cup from me.” Jesus felt the same way we do about obeying difficult instructions. He was fully human and was offering up “loud crying and tears.”
      4. “YET NOT WHAT I WILL”—He made the COMMITMENT. The WILL is where we make our choices, our decisions. We either surrender and submit or we fight and resist. (MY TESTIMONY: I fought with the Lord as a teenager. He was dealing with me to DIE TO MYSELF and follow Christ but my will refused. Then came the day where I could fight no more. I SURRENDERED. I COMMITTED my life, my future, my purpose to the will of God. THAT DAY WAS MY NEW DAY!)
  4. ALTAR CALL:
    1. I believe there are people here who may be hearing for the first time that Christ shed His blood for their sins once and for all. HE CAN GIVE YOU A NEW DAY OF FORGIVENESS. There is a “new covenant.”
    2. There are some of you who have never heard that Jesus even washed the feet of Judas and demonstrated the new commandment of love. HE CAN GIVE YOU A NEW DAY OF RELATIONSHIPS. There is a “new commandment.”
    3. There are some who are at Gethsemane, and you know both of those things. Your problem is not that you don’t know but that you can’t commit. Your WILL is strong and set to resist God’s love for you and His plan for your life. GOD IS GOING TO GIVE YOU A NEW DAY OF SURRENDER. Will you make a “new commitment?”

A New Day

What if this season could be more than routine? What if it could be a turning point? A New Day is a journey through the moments leading up to Easter: walking through expectation, surrender, and ultimately the resurrection of Jesus. It’s about recognizing when God is moving, releasing what’s behind us, and stepping into the life He’s inviting us to now. Whether you’re full of faith or just full of questions, this is a series for fresh starts. And there’s no better time to invite someone to sit with you, experience it with you. A new day is closer than you think.

Part 1: The Home At Bethany

In John 12, we see a powerful moment in the home of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, three siblings whose lives were forever changed by Christ. From resurrection power to extravagant worship, this story reveals how a true encounter with Jesus creates a brand new beginning. No matter where you are in life, a new day is possible with Christ.

Part 2: Here Comes Jesus!

In this message, we look at the triumphant entry of Jesus and what it reveals about who He truly is. Jesus is not just a historical figure or religious teacher. He is the Triumphant King who defeated darkness, and the Triumphant Savior who redeemed humanity. When Jesus comes into a life, a home, or a city, a new day begins.

Part 3: Three Steps To A New Day

A new day doesn't happen by accident, it happens through surrender. In this message, we step into one of the most powerful moments in Scripture: Jesus' final hours with His disciples at the Last Supper and in the Garden of Gethsemane. In these moments, Jesus introduces something completely new—a new covenant, a new commandment, and a new commitment.

Part 4: He Paid For It

What if the biggest weight you're carrying… has already been paid for? Jesus didn't just die for your sins. He paid for your peace, healing, identity, dignity, direction, and access to God. Every wound had a purpose. Every drop of blood carried freedom.
